Chicago
Architectural. Warm. Underrated.
Chicago is the city that consistently surprises nurses who arrive with low expectations. The architecture stops you mid-sentence. The food scene rivals any city on earth. The people are genuinely warm in a way that New York and LA never quite manage. And the lakefront — four seasons, always different, always worth it — is the kind of daily amenity that makes a 13-week assignment feel like a gift.

Eat & Drink
Where to Go
Avec — West Loop
Mediterranean small plates, communal tables, a wine list that rewards exploration. The chorizo-stuffed dates are a religious experience.
Au Cheval — West Loop
The burger that gets written about constantly and still lives up to it. Go at lunch to avoid the worst of the wait.
Giant — Logan Square
A tiny room, a short menu, everything perfect. The roast chicken is the best in the city. Book two weeks ahead.
Girl & The Goat — West Loop
Stephanie Izard’s flagship. Order the wood-roasted pig face if you’re curious and the goat empanadas regardless.
Do-Rite Donuts — Multiple Locations
The best donut in a city that takes donuts seriously. The old-fashioned and the blueberry fritter before your Saturday shift.
Curated
The LocateLuxe List
Walk the Chicago Riverwalk on a weekday morning. The architecture views from river level are unlike anything above ground.
Go to Avec on a Tuesday. Sit at the communal table. Order the chorizo dates immediately.
Take the Architecture Boat Tour once. $50, two hours, everything you’ve ever wanted to know about these buildings.
Find your lakefront spot — everyone has one. Walk it at different times until it’s yours.
Get to the Green City Market in Lincoln Park on a Wednesday or Saturday morning.
Visit the Art Institute for the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection. Budget three hours.

Wellness & Reset
Chicago Lakefront Trail
18 miles of paved path along Lake Michigan. Run north toward Evanston or south toward Hyde Park. Either direction is beautiful.
East Bank Club — River North
The serious gym. Pool, courts, spa, classes. Day passes available for travel nurses. Worth it for the pool alone.
Millennium Park — The Loop
Free, beautiful, and surprising at every season. The Cloud Gate at dawn on a December morning is genuinely otherworldly.
Insider Notes
What Nurses Say
On Housing
“Lincoln Park and Wicker Park are the best bases. Both walkable, great food access, and safe. Furnished Finder has solid Chicago inventory — start early.”
On Getting Around
“The L is genuinely good. Learn two or three lines and you can get anywhere. Skip driving inside the loop entirely.”
On Winter
“The winters are not as bad as people say — they’re exactly as bad as people say. Invest in a real coat before you arrive. The city keeps moving regardless.”
